Introduction

The Afghanistan National Horticulture Development Organization (ANHDO) is a Non-Governmental Organization supporting the development of the perennial horticulture industry in Afghanistan. ANHDO is registered with the Ministry of Economy under registration number 1384 dated 27/01/1388 (16 April 2009). The development of ANHDO is part of the European Union (EU) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) long term strategy for the development of horticulture – see Agriculture Master Plan (2009) and the National Priority Program II (2012). ANHDO incorporated the best horticulturists trained by the EU-funded Perennial Horticulture Development Project (PHDP) and now owns an excellent technical team composed of experienced national horticulturists in seven provinces. Moreover, having been at the center of the horticulture development in the past eight years, it has already assembled an outstanding roster of international and national specialists in the various fields of horticulture, ready and committed to work for and support the organization.
Last but not least, the organization has carefully built the capacity of the administrative machine and has now an effective and efficient administration team. ANHDO key personnel were trained for over six years under the PHDP. They personally implemented and inherited the whole program of adaptive research which is the foundation for the development of modern horticulture in Afghanistan.
